The surge reached the train at Islamorada and tested the arithmetic that separated a locomotive from a passenger car.
The locomotive weighed approximately 160 tons. Its mass was concentrated low — the boiler, the frame, the driving wheels and their counterweights, the fuel and water in the tender, the dense assembly of steel and iron that made a steam locomotive the heaviest single object in the railroad’s inventory. The wind, at 160 knots, applied a lateral force to the locomotive’s profile that was enormous in absolute terms and insufficient relative to the locomotive’s mass and the friction of its wheels against the rails. The locomotive shifted. It did not overturn. The tender, coupled behind it, shifted with it. The two remained on the track.
The passenger cars weighed approximately twenty tons each.
The ratio was decisive. The same lateral wind force that the locomotive’s mass could resist, the passenger cars could not. The cars were lighter by a factor of eight. They were taller relative to their width — presenting a larger sail area per unit of mass. They were constructed of wood and lightweight steel, not the dense iron of the locomotive. And the surge, which had risen to the level of the car floors and was now flowing across the track with a velocity that added its hydraulic force to the wind’s aerodynamic force, pushed against the cars’ undercarriages from the side with a pressure the rails could not counter.
The cars lifted.
The first car to go separated from its coupling and tilted away from the wind, the leeward wheels lifting from the rail, the car rotating around its windward axle until the center of gravity passed the tipping point and the car fell — not gently, not gradually, but with the sudden, total commitment of an object that has exceeded the limits of its stability and surrenders to the forces that have been accumulating against it. The car struck the water on the bay side of the track and was carried by the surge into the mangroves, deposited among the root systems and the debris that the water had already collected from the islands.
The second car followed. The third. The sequence ran down the length of the train — car after car tipping, separating, falling into the surge and carried away from the track by the water’s lateral flow. Eleven cars, swept from the rails in the space of minutes, deposited in the mangroves and the shallow water on the bay side of Upper Matecumbe Key. The locomotive and tender remained on the track. Everything behind them was gone.
The men inside the cars survived the overturning.
The cars, for all their inadequacy against the wind and surge that removed them from the rails, provided shelter that the open islands did not. The men who had boarded the train at Islamorada — the veterans who had reached it through the wind and the water, who had crowded into the coaches and boxcars with the desperate energy of men who believed the train was their salvation — found themselves thrown against the walls and ceiling and each other as the cars tilted and fell, but they found themselves inside a structure that, however battered and displaced, maintained its basic integrity. The walls held. The roofs held. The cars, lying on their sides in the mangroves, became shelters of a different kind — not vehicles of evacuation but containers of survival, keeping the men inside them out of the surge that was flowing across the islands at lethal depth and velocity.
The men who could not reach the train did not have this shelter.

The rescue train — Flagler’s railroad, the Overseas extension, the engineering marvel that had connected the Keys to the mainland for twenty-three years, the single corridor of steel that the evacuation plan had depended upon — was finished.
The locomotive stood on the track at Islamorada. Behind it, the rails were bare. The cars were in the mangroves. The track south toward Lower Matecumbe was submerged, displaced, the roadbed washed from under the rails in the sections where the surge had scoured the embankment fill. The track north toward Homestead — the return route, the path to safety that the train had been intended to follow with its passengers — was in conditions the engineer could not assess from the cab but that the storm’s behavior made obvious. The bridges, the causeways, the embankment approaches that the train had crossed on its southbound run were now receiving the full force of the back eye wall, the surge from the south-southwest adding its volume to the bay surge that had already been running across the roadbed for hours.
The train was not going anywhere.
The Analyst treated the wrecked rescue train as the clearest possible system lesson. The line meant to remove the camps had been struck while trying to do its job.
The locomotive stood alone on the track.
The wind howled past it.
The water flowed around it.
The engineer and fireman, in the cab, waited for the storm to pass.
