The anemometer on the Levy Building measured an average wind of eighty-four miles per hour and a gust of one hundred.

Joseph Cline knew the instrument and its log with the familiarity required of a Weather Bureau observer. Its cups, gearing, and record had translated moving air into figures he could compare with every earlier observation from the station.
